Pre-surgery Education

Surgery for your animal companion is never an easy choice. At Hill Country Animal Hospital, we want you to have a clear understanding of the procedure and its benefits. Before choosing surgery, we provide education on the necessity of the procedure, what the procedure entails, and post-operative care. Our goal is to help you to make the right choice for your pet.

Surgery Procedures

On the day of surgery, care begins before your pet arrives at the hospital. Our dedicated surgical team prepares the surgical unit and ensures everything is ready when your pet arrives.

Once your pet arrives, he or she will be examined by one of our experienced veterinarians and a pre-surgical blood screen is performed. The results of these tests, combined with your pet’s medical history, are used to create an individualized anesthesia plan for your animal companion.

During surgery, we follow a strict protocol to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort. This includes close monitoring at all times by one of our trained veterinarian technicians. Using a highly advanced cardiovascular monitoring system, we continually check the following during surgery:

  • Arterial oxygen levels
  • Carbon dioxide levels
  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate
  • Electrocardiogram, or ECG, monitoring
  • Respiratory rate
  • Core body temperature

We also take care to use several operative procedures that promote quick recovery. These include the use of:

  • Surgical laser, which reduces trauma to the tissue and helps with pain and inflammation post-surgery
  • Individualized anesthesia, which manages pain during the procedure
  • Thermal blankets, which increase your pet’s overall comfort during and after surgery
  • Cold laser therapy, which promotes healing and decreases pain post-surgery

Post-surgery Care

Our hospital strives to provide your pet with a quick, safe, and comfortable recovery. We take several steps to ensure your pet receives the appropriate care following his or her surgery. This includes continued close monitoring by a skilled veterinary technician to watch your pet’s vital signs. We also continue to provide individualized pain management to aid with your pet’s recovery. Our hospital offers a range of medications and administration methods that can be used to best fit your pet’s unique needs.

At discharge, we provide comprehensive education on properly caring for your pet at home after surgery. This includes a thorough explanation of any medication your pet continues to use. If at any time you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s surgery, please do not hesitate to contact us. At Hill Country Animal Hospital, the well-being of your pet is our highest priority.

What Do You Know About Parvovirus?

Why are we talking about parvovirus right now?  The answer is because parvovirus has been making the rounds in San Antonio for the last month or so in much higher numbers than we usually see.  We don’t really want to test your knowledge of parvovirus but we do want to make sure that you are […]

Rattlesnakes Are Still Rattling Around

Rattlesnake season is not over yet! Helotes and San Antonio have been seeing days and days of steady rain and this is bringing out rattlesnakes.  When it rains, snakes seek higher ground and this increases our chances of encountering them.  This rain may be contributing to the high number of dogs being bitten by rattlesnakes recently.  […]

So happy we were referred to this office, very satisfied with the experience. Really concerned about leaving our vet in AZ. We are happy now. Everyone was caring and professional. Would highly recommend this office.

This was my first visit with a dog that I had had for a week and a half. I wanted him thoroughly examined for health and a neuter. I had a number of questions since it's been a long time since I have had a younger dog and Dr. Rooker took all of the time necessary to answer all of my questions. I'm afraid I kept everyone there late and I really appreciate the excellent experience. You are my new veterinarian.

I really can't offer any suggestions for improvement. Dr. Rooker is great. No matter what we see or call her for, she is always very knowledgeable as well as very kind. Also, she always follows up with a phone call. This is very much appreciated. Your staff is great. When we walk in the door, we are always greeted by name made to feel that our visit is just as important to them as it is to us. Thank you.

I was very impressed with the welcoming facility and how much Harley was catered to. She never leaves the house but she felt at home in her exam room roaming around and jumping on counters. She even greeted everyone with open arms even though she was in a new place. She as well as her sister will be coming back if the need arises.
