Pre-surgery Education
Surgery for your animal companion is never an easy choice. At Hill Country Animal Hospital, we want you to have a clear understanding of the procedure and its benefits. Before choosing surgery, we provide education on the necessity of the procedure, what the procedure entails, and post-operative care. Our goal is to help you to make the right choice for your pet.
Surgery Procedures
On the day of surgery, care begins before your pet arrives at the hospital. Our dedicated surgical team prepares the surgical unit and ensures everything is ready when your pet arrives.
Once your pet arrives, he or she will be examined by one of our experienced veterinarians and a pre-surgical blood screen is performed. The results of these tests, combined with your pet’s medical history, are used to create an individualized anesthesia plan for your animal companion.
During surgery, we follow a strict protocol to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort. This includes close monitoring at all times by one of our trained veterinarian technicians. Using a highly advanced cardiovascular monitoring system, we continually check the following during surgery:
- Arterial oxygen levels
- Carbon dioxide levels
- Blood pressure
- Heart rate
- Electrocardiogram, or ECG, monitoring
- Respiratory rate
- Core body temperature
We also take care to use several operative procedures that promote quick recovery. These include the use of:
- Surgical laser, which reduces trauma to the tissue and helps with pain and inflammation post-surgery
- Individualized anesthesia, which manages pain during the procedure
- Thermal blankets, which increase your pet’s overall comfort during and after surgery
- Cold laser therapy, which promotes healing and decreases pain post-surgery
Post-surgery Care
Our hospital strives to provide your pet with a quick, safe, and comfortable recovery. We take several steps to ensure your pet receives the appropriate care following his or her surgery. This includes continued close monitoring by a skilled veterinary technician to watch your pet’s vital signs. We also continue to provide individualized pain management to aid with your pet’s recovery. Our hospital offers a range of medications and administration methods that can be used to best fit your pet’s unique needs.
At discharge, we provide comprehensive education on properly caring for your pet at home after surgery. This includes a thorough explanation of any medication your pet continues to use. If at any time you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s surgery, please do not hesitate to contact us. At Hill Country Animal Hospital, the well-being of your pet is our highest priority.
